Urban Shaman 1
shamanic course in Helsinki
Experiencing Urban Shamanism
18th -19th of MARCH 2020
Era Nova, Kasarmikatu 2, Helsinki
INTRODUCTION TO SHAMANISM * URBAN SHAMANISM AND NATURE CONNECTION * CEREMONY * DRUM JOURNEY
Welcome to learn the introductory elements of shamanic practice in Helsinki. This course is for all the urban earth walkers, who would like to integrate their eternal nature connection, soul life, and urban culture. The urban shamans gather in the most inspiring core of Helsinki, at the magical Era Nova Bookshop’s course space. Here we will learn about the basics of shamanic practice such as the shamanic medicine table (alter ground), participate in shamanic ceremony and drum journey, and get to know Helsinki from shamanic point of view.
This course is suitable for everybody, who are simply curious about ritual and ceremonial practices, and to deepen their own perception of what it means to be a human. This course is aimed for participants, who are just getting to know shamanic practices, or for persons, who already have their own practice in solitude, but wish for inspiring social aspect.
This shamanic course is based on safe practices based on clear mind, meditation, use of shamanic instruments, voice, and dance. The approach in the course is universal, where we walk on Mother Earth as one people. Specific cultural-geographic themes such as Finno-Ugric shamanism are not part of this course, but these specific approaches are welcome to be applied within the universal template after this course. The teacher of this course comes from North Karelia, from East Finland, and carries in her heart the wisdom of these ancestral lands. We will move together between these different times and places. You are welcome for the journey!
If you are not familiar with, what shamanism means, I like this quote from don Oscar Miro Quesada:
“Today’s shaman leaves new footprints on paths of psychic awareness and
spiritual wisdom that are over thirty thousand years old. Shamanism is a
millennial tradition of healing, power and wisdom that sees all of life as
interconnected and sacred. Material and spiritual worlds interpenetrate one
another, and the shaman’s path lies in attaining a life of harmony with both.
The process of shamanic awakening is as vast as the universe itself. It excludes
no one, and yet includes only those willing to surrender a limited sense of self.
One must live it to understand it.
In the shamanic world-view, mind and body are inseparable. There is no
distinction perceived between physical, psychological, spiritual and social ills.
Even life and death are not seen as separate conditions. Healing, in a native
sense, means making a person whole by restoring the health of the body, mind,
spirit and community. Tribal shamanic societies believe that we are part of the universe and must be in
balance with all of Mother Earth and Father Sky in gratitude to Great Spirit. They have much to teach us today.”
As the course guide serves Helena Karhu, a shamanic practitioner, teacher, healer, and a mother of 7-year old twins. Helena is currently writing a Ph.D. research on Cultural Anthropology on the female Nordic shamans and their visionary seeing. Helenas life project is Karhun Talo (House of the Bear), Center of Shamanism and Folk Healing. She is born in Joensuu, North Karelia, Finland, and both of her parental lineages have deep roots in North Karelian soil. She had a beautiful international career in international cooperation until 2015, when she devoted her life full-time for shamanic and spiritual practices, along with mothering.
Helena’s main teacher is a Peruvian shaman don Oscar Miro-Quesada, who has taught Helena advanced studies in shamanic healing arts, alchemy, and magic. Helena has deep roots in Tibetan Buddhist philosophy and practice, and likes to incorporate the Tibetan practices into her Nordic heritage along with the Peruvian wisdom traditions. Helena’s passion is to bring forth the light-increasing, co-operative, and empowering aspects of the shamanic practice, where everyone can rest as they are, yet have freedom to become who they are.
